The right to know

The basic right of an employee to know how much they are paid and how that compensation has been calculated is accepted as the indisputable right of an employee. This is besides the employee contract wherein things such as work hours and the responsibilities of the employee are explained and wherein the basic responsibilities of both the employer and employee is contained. Such a payslip should indicate the amount of hours that were worked as well as any overtime and then any deduction which may apply should be properly indicated on your a payslip. Such a payslip could be issued together with the pay or slightly before payday and should contain all of the information that the employee is entitled to. Most of these things will be included in the job description of the employee such as the number of hours that the employer demands and also the specific day on which compensation is made. There may be alternatives

All employees are fully entitled to be issued a document which clearly inform them exactly how much their compensation will be and exactly when such compensation will occur and such things should be done in full compliance with the contract which exists between the employer and the employee. There are some workers which may not be entitled to receive a payslip, such as members of the police service. Likewise indirect employees such as contractors or someone who takes on a task on a freelance basis will not be entitled to receive a payslip. Likewise those who make their living on the ocean such as a person involved in share fishing and who will therefore be compensated according to their particular share in that venture will not be entitled to receive a payslip.

Regulations regarding pay slips

Your payslip should accurately indicate exactly how much the employee will receive and therefore how much has been transferred to the bank account of the employee or how much cash was given to you. Any normal employee deductions such as tax or other benefits which may apply should be accurately indicated on your payslip. There should be no uncertainty about the net amount which the employee will receive after compulsory deductions. Your payslip should also indicate the gross wages which was earned by the employee and how they were calculated. Many employees make contributions to industry related unions and other trade organizations and all of these deductions should be clearly noted in such a pay slip.

Pay slips my differ from employer to employer

Most employees will strictly comply with government regulations regarding payslips but there are some that might go beyond the letter of the law and they will provide a broader breakdown of earnings and deductions and this may include things such as extra bonuses or extra income such as customer tips or even additional overtime to which the employee might have agreed. These employers will include information such as the rate which was used to calculate compensation whether that be daily, weekly or monthly. These employers may include other information such as national insurance numbers or even things such as tax codes and all these things are provided to ensure absolute transparency and to eliminate any uncertainty regarding the process. There is a lot of information available on the internet regarding payslips as well as the rights which an employee has in this regard so that there are no need to remain in the dark regarding this important issue.

  1. Please where can I find the ”letter of law” regard to Payslip contain(rules of implement of the law). Keen on NMW and or visibility of calculation. Not just stated the gross amount, tax, NI. Thank you so much for support and patience.CB

  2. i am against the minimum wages. If 2 people have the same role within a business why does one get paid more then the other.
